Orhan Pamuk, Nobel laureate and Turkey's most famous writer (and one of my absolute favorite writers) praised the protesters for defending the park, a popular historical landmark as well as one of the last green spots in the city.

"Seeing that they will not easily give up their memories gives me hope for the future," he wrote.

The protests in Turkey are much beyond defending a park. They are a cry for radical changes towards freedom. I truly, truly hope they will bring new light, and not too much hurt.

“I don't want to be a tree; I want to be its meaning.”
― Orhan Pamuk, My Name is Red
